What is Shotokan Karate?
|
What can I expect from karate?
Karate is the Japanese word for empty hand. It is a system of self defense which developed in Okinawa over a period of many centuries. This system of self defense was designed to allow an unarmed person to defend against an armed assailant. Karate was introduced to Japan by Gichin Funakoshi early in the twentieth century. Shotokan Karate as taught by the Japanese Karate Association of Japan and North Texas is the direct descendant of Gichin Funakoshi’s karate. The name Shotokan was applied to this form of karate as a mark of respect to Gichin Funakoshi who signed himself “Shoto” in his writings. Shotokan is one of the most popular systems of Karate in Japan and the world today.
